It has been a decade since the last game, yet Fallout is once again at the center of attention. Following the premiere of the TV series’s second season, Bethesda executives have spoken about the franchise’s future, making one thing clear: the next Fallout aims to be a world players can inhabit for hundreds of hours.
Despite the absence of a new mainline entry for ten years, Fallout has remained culturally relevant thanks to its television adaptation. With Season 2 now released, Bethesda has reopened the conversation about what lies ahead for the series, offering cautious but encouraging signals.
According to Todd Howard, several unannounced Fallout-related projects are currently in development. This comes even as most of the studio’s resources remain dedicated to The Elder Scrolls VI, suggesting that Fallout’s future is being shaped in parallel rather than put on hold.
The One Certainty About the Next Fallout
Todd Howard was not alone in addressing the series’ future. Design director Emil Pagliarulo told Game Informer that the next Fallout will remain structurally familiar while offering unprecedented depth. “I’d be happy with a game that’s as successful as the previous ones and continues to give players that experience they love. I want a story that hooks them and systems they truly enjoy. Not something they play for 20 or 100 hours, but something they can spend 200, 300, or even 600 hours in. That’s the kind of game we make.”
At the same time, Pagliarulo hinted at gradual evolution within the formula. “I hope that we keep doing what we’ve always done, but evolve. Evolve in step with the industry and the players, so we don’t get stuck in the past.” He cited small but meaningful changes, such as the introduction of sprinting in the Oblivion Remake or the decision to abandon silent protagonists in Fallout 4.
“The industry has moved forward, and we want to move forward with it,” Pagliarulo concluded. The real question is how far the medium will have progressed by the time the next Fallout arrives. What seems clear is that while news about the franchise may surface sooner rather than later, a new mainline entry is still a long way off. Before that happens, The Elder Scrolls VI must come first, and that release is not expected before 2027.
