A hardcore tactical shooter built around unforgiving realism, dynamic weather, and teamwork is fighting for survival. EXFIL, created by one of the designers behind Squad, has all but vanished from Steam’s radar. In response, the developers have launched a free trial and a major discount in a last-ditch effort to save the game.
Tactical shooters have always had a dedicated audience, even as a niche genre. But when release schedules become overcrowded, many studios inevitably lose visibility. That is precisely what has happened to Tiny Leviathan.
The studio released EXFIL on December 11, 2024. Designed as a first-person shooter defined by strict realism, the game was co-created by one of the minds behind Squad and draws clear inspiration from classic Delta Force. Despite this pedigree, the title hit a worrying low this week, recording just 15 concurrent players on Steam.
Faced with these alarming numbers, the developers have opted for emergency measures in an attempt to prevent the project from fading away entirely.
EXFIL is now offering a free trial that grants full access to the game until December 31. At the same time, as part of the Steam Winter Sale, its price has been cut by 30 percent, bringing it down to €13.65 until January 5. The goal is clear: to reignite interest among both new and returning players.
A Realistic Shooter with a Living Day–Night Cycle – This Is EXFIL
At its core, EXFIL blends classic Delta Force-style gameplay with an extraction-based structure. Players must fight their way across the map, reach a downed helicopter or another designated extraction point, secure valuable intel, and escape the area alive.
Missions feature encounters with AI-controlled enemies as well as other players, though those seeking cooperation can also tackle the experience in a fully cooperative mode that emphasizes coordination and planning.
As is often the case with early access tactical shooters, EXFIL is available exclusively on PC. This allows the developers to fully commit to a design philosophy built around precision, communication, and tactical awareness.
The level of realism is striking. The game features a full 24-hour day–night cycle and a fully simulated weather system. Sandstorms, dynamic fog, and heavy rain ensure that no two operations unfold in the same way.
With its free trial and reduced price, EXFIL is making one last push to regain visibility on Valve’s platform before the end of the year. Whether this will be enough to secure its future in an increasingly saturated market remains to be seen.
