TECH NEWS – Not even the company known for its modular laptops can escape the price increases caused by the memory crisis.
Framework allows users to customize their laptops and desktops while maintaining a modular design that permits future upgrades. However, due to the global RAM shortage, the company announced two weeks ago that the price of all DDR5 RAM modules would increase by 50%. While this price increase is significant, the exact percentage has not been specified. All that has been announced is that, going forward, each gigabyte of memory will cost $10. Therefore, an 8 GB memory module will cost $80. However, the increase is significantly higher in euros.
Based on information from the company’s website, we calculated that the average price increase is 32.5%. For example, the price of an 8 GB DDR5 RAM module with a speed of 5600 MT/s increased from €68 to €90. The price of 16 GB of RAM increased from €136 to €180. The price of 32 GB of RAM increased from €272 to €360. Thus, we can see that the price per GB of RAM increased by 32.35%. Before the original price increase, each GB cost €8.50; now, it costs €11.25. Although 48 GB modules are no longer on the list, they originally cost €408, so they would now cost €540. The €544 64 GB modules are also missing from the list. If they were included, they would cost €720. Finally, the price of 96 GB memory modules would have risen from €816 to €1,080.
The good news is that prices are lower than at many other stores. Additionally, the company does not require you to purchase RAM for their systems, allowing you to use existing or more affordable memory. However, it’s worth noting that Framework has removed the higher-capacity DDR5 RAM options. This shows that they are limiting this memory in lower-end configurations to extend their lifespan. This makes sense, as otherwise, they would likely announce another price increase in the near future, given that memory prices are constantly rising and will likely continue to do so until mid-2026.
Unlike laptops that use memory modules, the RAM in the Framework Desktop is soldered directly to the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor. The price of the model with 128 GB of RAM remains at €2,359 because Framework does not pass on price increases to the hardware it sells unless DDR5 RAM is purchased at the modified price. Unlike a business that seeks to maximize revenue, Framework charges a fair price for RAM in exchange for selling PCs, its primary business activity.
