We Now Know Where Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Idea Came From

MOVIE NEWS – Christopher Nolan told Variety that he has been nurturing the idea for The Odyssey ever since Troy was taken away from him in 2003.

One of the biggest movie events of 2026 is set to be The Odyssey, shot entirely in the IMAX format, Christopher Nolan’s next major work after Oppenheimer. As he told Variety, he has been carrying the project idea for a long time, specifically since Troy was taken from him in 2003. The period production built an adventure film from elements of Homer’s epic, complete with the infamous wooden horse and Brad Pitt. The project was originally developed for years by Wolfgang Petersen, who intended to direct it himself, but he ultimately chose Batman vs. Superman instead, and Troy went to Nolan. Then the studio suddenly pulled the plug on the superhero movie, and Petersen demanded his horse-epic back, arguing that he had worked on it so much that he was the one who truly understood it. By that point, however, Nolan had already dug deep into Homer’s world, and the mythic epic would not leave him alone, so while making one great film after another, he kept refining The Odyssey.

In the end, it seems the gods arranged things favorably that he missed out on the wooden horse more than two decades ago: with The Odyssey, which is shaping up to be a cinematic landmark, Nolan can now aim much higher than he could have with Troy, and that is not only good news for him.
