Final Fantasy XIV: The Director Asks for Our Patience Regarding the Switch Version!

While there is still no official confirmation, Square Enix‘s MMORPG is very likely to arrive on a Nintendo Switch platform.

During a New Year’s celebration held on Japanese servers, Yoshida Naoki – producer of Final Fantasy XVI and director and producer of Final Fantasy XIV – hinted that the popular MMORPG may eventually be released on Nintendo Switch. According to a report from the Livedoor blog, when asked about the possibility, he replied: “Please look forward to it!”.

While this does not constitute an official confirmation, fans see it as a clear sign that progress is being made. Yoshida previously discussed the idea in June 2024, suggesting that a port was possible but still some way off.

The topic resurfaced during Gamescom 2025, where Yoshida elaborated on the potential benefits of a Switch version in an interview with VGC, addressing both existing players and newcomers.

“For current Final Fantasy XIV players, if a Nintendo Switch 2 version were to be released, they could play through the main story and complete raids on PC. For other types of content, they could relax on the sofa with the Switch 2 and focus on gathering and crafting,” Yoshida explained.

He also highlighted the opportunity to introduce the MMO genre to younger players, noting that discussions with Nintendo have already begun and have so far been positive.

In his New Year’s message, Yoshida appeared to reference the Nintendo Switch in general rather than explicitly naming the Switch 2. While Final Fantasy XIV originally launched on PlayStation 3 and could theoretically run on the original Switch, the growing demands of recent expansions make a next-generation handheld release far more likely.

The game recently received its 7.4 update, adding new main scenario quests, a new dungeon, a new trial, the Heavyweight Raid Tier of the Arcadion series, a Glamour System overhaul, and a new Frontline map.

Chinese players have already been able to try the mobile version, Final Fantasy XIV: Crystal World, developed by Tencent LightSpeed Studios. A global release date has not yet been announced.
