TECH NEWS – An Apple laptop managed to stop shrapnel from an artillery shell, quite literally saving a human life.

The MacBook’s solid construction, forged from a single block of aluminum, comes with several advantages. While it certainly increases the longevity of Apple’s laptops, this rigid design can also prove to be a literal lifesaver. A Ukrainian soldier owes his survival to an M1 MacBook Air, which absorbed a piece of shrapnel from an artillery shell that could have otherwise been fatal. Remarkably, despite a large hole torn through the chassis, the display remains functional.

If this incident does not restore faith in the manufacturing quality of MacBooks, it is difficult to imagine what would.

A former cinematographer who later enlisted in the Ukrainian army shared two images on Twitter, showing how his M1 MacBook Air stopped a fragment from an artillery shell. As seen in the photos, there is a massive hole in both the display and the lower section of the laptop, with the MacBook absorbing the impact on both sides.

This is not the first time a MacBook has been credited with saving a life. In a previous incident in Fort Lauderdale, a MacBook Pro reportedly saved its owner after being struck by a 9mm bullet. What makes the M1 MacBook Air particularly impressive is that, although the screen is clearly damaged and requires replacement, @lanevychs demonstrates in the video below that the display remains usable and can still be scrolled.

Apple’s Mac lineup has shown surprising resilience in other extreme situations as well. In one case, a MacBook was hit by a car and suffered only minor cosmetic damage. An M5 MacBook Pro owner later admitted he was genuinely surprised by the machine’s durability, having assumed the devices were far more fragile.

The only manufacturer that can realistically compete with Apple’s aluminum unibody construction is Razer. However, Reddit users frequently complain about recurring hardware and software issues affecting Razer’s laptops.

While Apple devices may come with a premium price tag, incidents like this clearly demonstrate that their build quality can be nothing short of exceptional.
