Mistborn as a Video Game? Brandon Sanderson Says the Door Is Finally Open

After years of obstacles, the author believes a Mistborn video game is now within reach, with several major studios showing interest.

Few names resonate as strongly in fantasy and science fiction as Brandon Sanderson. The creator of the Cosmere is no stranger to video games, having collaborated on the world of Subnautica and long expressed his admiration for FromSoftware. For years, fans have wondered when his novels would make the jump to gaming, and according to Sanderson, that moment may finally be approaching—especially for Mistborn.

Mistborn is a fantasy series set in a dark, oppressive world ruled by a tyrant known as the Lord Ruler. The saga is part of the Cosmere, the shared universe that connects most of Sanderson’s works, including The Stormlight Archive and Elantris. While each story unfolds on a different planet with its own magic system, they all belong to a larger narrative framework, filled with hidden links and recurring elements.

A Mistborn Game Is More Likely Than Ever

In his latest annual “State of the Sanderson” blog post, the author confirmed that he is currently in talks with several AAA studios about the possibility of a Mistborn video game. He described this as the first time he has seen genuine interest from the video game industry. The project is still in the pitching phase, meaning ideas are being presented and discussed, but no official development has yet begun.

One key change is that the film rights which blocked video game adaptations of Mistborn for the past six or seven years are no longer an issue. This clears the way for more direct negotiations, with Sanderson retaining greater control over the property.

This would not be the first attempt to bring Mistborn to gaming. In 2018, inspired by The Witcher 3, Sanderson even offered the license to CD Projekt, though the project never materialized. Earlier still, Mistborn: Birthright was announced in 2012 as an action RPG prequel written by Sanderson and developed by Little Orbit, but it was ultimately canceled before meaningful progress was made.

While details about gameplay remain scarce, Sanderson has made it clear he is open to collaboration with studios that share his vision. For now, a Mistborn video game no longer feels like a distant dream, but a realistic possibility.
