HBO’s The Last of Us has earned its reputation as one of the strongest video game adaptations ever made, and work on its third season is already underway. Still, fans were caught off guard months ago when Neil Druckmann announced he was stepping down from his role as writer and producer. The decision raised questions about the show’s future, but Bella Ramsey has moved to reassure viewers.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor behind Ellie explained that Druckmann’s influence remains deeply embedded in the series. Although he officially exited after season two to focus on his responsibilities at Naughty Dog, Ramsey insists the foundation he left behind is more than strong enough. “He left us in a very good position. He will always be part of the show’s DNA because it’s literally his creation. He’s still here, even if he’s no longer here,” she said.

Ramsey also confirmed that scripts for season three already exist, even if she has not yet had the opportunity to read them. This suggests that production is moving ahead smoothly despite the creative shift. The upcoming season will adapt the events of The Last of Us Part II, focusing primarily on Abby’s storyline, keeping the television series aligned with the structure of the games.

What is clear is that Druckmann is far from stepping away from the industry. He announced his departure from The Last of Us in July 2025 after serving as co-creator, showrunner, director, writer, and producer, choosing instead to dedicate himself fully to Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. The project will mark Naughty Dog’s next major release, though no launch window has been revealed.

Druckmann Isn’t the Only Change Facing the Series

The third season will also bring another cast adjustment. Danny Ramirez, who portrayed Manny in season two, will not return due to scheduling conflicts tied to his work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The role will be recast, while Craig Mazin remains firmly in place as showrunner, ensuring continuity behind the scenes.
