Rebellion Developments’ game is about to leave Steam’s Early Access program and will arrive on consoles shortly afterward.
Speedball is a revival of the iconic Bitmap Brothers franchise that first launched in 1988. Set in the grim future of 2138, the game depicts a no-holds-barred sport used by mega-corporations to distract the downtrodden masses from their miserable lives. It is the only sport in which two cybernetically enhanced teams can clash at speeds and levels of violence far beyond human limits.
Matches are fast-paced, explosive, and unpredictable, requiring mastery of high-speed passing, tight coordination, and precise shooting. Speedball delivers a brutal sports experience featuring numerous teams and arenas, where taking advantage of arena-specific obstacles and abilities is essential to gaining the upper hand. The slow-motion Slam Cam captures the most intense and violent collisions.
Arcade-style matches are combined with sports management strategy. Players can assemble a team tailored to their preferred playstyle based on individual traits and talents. Skills can be honed against AI opponents before taking on friends either online or locally.
Speedball entered Early Access in October 2024, and since then Rebellion has continuously expanded the game with new features and updates. These include a new League Mode, where 10 teams compete across a full season for the championship title, as well as a tutorial system designed to help new players get up to speed. Brutal variants of arenas were added alongside the standard versions.
Visual improvements include upgraded VFX for high-impact collisions, an improved shooting system for more accurate shot placement, and refined gameplay mechanics affecting speed, goalkeepers, and AI. Eight new arenas joined the roster, along with dynamic arena traps and obstacles such as flamethrowers, ice cannons, and grind rails. New armor sets and color styles were also introduced.
Speedball will leave Early Access on Steam on January 27. It will launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series on the same day.
