The statement suggests that major changes are underway in the video game industry, with consoles no longer at the center of attention.
While the PC market has expanded significantly over the years, the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and the recently released Nintendo Switch 2 continue to dominate the gaming market in many regions around the world. However, the rapid growth in the number of games released on PC digital storefronts in recent years indicates that a shift may be taking place. Some well-known developers now believe that the PC market has become the dominant force in the industry.
In an interview with RPG Site focusing on his latest title, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy, Kazutaka Kodaka, creator of the Danganronpa series, was asked about the game’s strong PC port. His response was unambiguous: according to Kodaka, the PC market currently dominates, and a global release on Steam is essential.
Although Kodaka did not elaborate further, his confirmation that the team is not considering PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series ports for The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy clearly illustrates how traditional home consoles are being left behind. Following the early 2020s peak, when pandemic-related lockdowns drove increased gaming activity, the industry has entered a turbulent period that is challenging long-standing business models.
Earlier this week, Shawn Layden, former president of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, also weighed in on the subject. In an interview, he noted that the total installed base of console users has remained relatively flat over several generations and proposed the creation of a consortium similar to those that standardized VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray formats, with the goal of steering the video game industry toward a unified, licensable format.
With releasing games on Steam becoming increasingly essential on PC, and both Microsoft and Sony placing greater emphasis on the platform, it appears that the industry is already moving toward a more unified, platform-centric model. This shift has been further reinforced by the arrival of handheld PCs such as the Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Xbox Ally.
At the same time, the surge in demand driven by the AI boom has significantly increased RAM prices, which is expected to raise the cost of nearly all electronic devices. This impact may be delayed, however, as the lifespan of the current console generation could be extended until market conditions stabilize.
