MOVIE NEWS – Most horror movies run on well-worn templates, so it’s often easy to guess who will drop one by one – and who will make it out alive.
For example, when a monster is picking off the cast, audiences can frequently spot the so-called Last Girl early on – the final woman who not only survives, but also delivers the finishing blow to her pursuer.
The horror script for Primate originally followed that exact pattern, but at the last moment the filmmakers realized it could use a twist. “A week before shooting started, we rewrote the script at breakneck speed and killed off one of the main characters, because we realized they couldn’t be the survivor,” said Primate director Johannes Roberts. “Hopefully that will be a big surprise for audiences.”
In Primate, a pet chimpanzee named Ben becomes infected with rabies and starts slaughtering the young people at a pool party. Roberts openly admits the idea was inspired by Stephen King’s novel Cujo and the film adaptation – where a St. Bernard completely snaps. Ben, the rabid ape, is a distant cousin to that concept.
