Japanese developers Cygames, known for Granblue Fantasy, Shadowverse, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby, have decided to err on the side of caution.
Cygames recently faced significant backlash from many of its loyal fans due to the creation of Cygames AI Studio, a subsidiary. This new division aims to build on the experience gained in game development to create AI technology that creators can safely and reliably use. The company aims to establish a distinctive creative cycle that not only improves efficiency but also expands the creativity of its users.
According to the announcement, with this new studio, Cygames aims to create new user experiences and realize its vision of becoming the best content creation company. The developer published a public apology letter promising that they did not use generative AI tools in their games and that they would not include generative AI in their games without prior notice.

“To all our Cygames fans and supporters: over the past few days, we have received numerous comments expressing anger and disappointment. This was due to our release of a simplified announcement in Japanese regarding the establishment of Cygames AI Studio, Inc., which failed to address the current issues and social debates surrounding generative AI. We sincerely apologize for any concern we may have caused.
We would like to take this opportunity to state that we do not use art produced from genAI in our products. Furthermore, we will not implement genAI in our products without prior notice. We hold in the highest regard those who love games, as well as the dignity, passion, and heart of the creators and artists who are the architects of gaming culture. All current Cygames games and products feature art crafted from the technical expertise and manual work of our staff. Once again, we deeply apologize for causing our beloved fans so much grief and anxiety. At Cygames, we will continue to honor creators and champion free expression, striving to be the best in entertainment. Thank you for your continued support,” wrote Cygames.
The Japanese developer is just the latest to get caught up in the controversy surrounding generative AI. Consider the case of Larian Studios.
