Stellan Skarsgård Calls Trump “Absurd” Over Greenland Obsession

MOVIE NEWS – US President Donald Trump’s ongoing pursuit of Greenland has been openly mocked by MCU star Stellan Skarsgård. The Swedish actor – whose home country sits next to Denmark, which controls Greenland – attended the European Film Awards in Berlin yesterday (January 17), where reporters pressed him on the Trump administration’s invasive brand of geopolitics.

That same day, the controversial leader announced he would impose 25% trade tariffs on Denmark, Norway, France, Germany, Britain, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Finland unless a deal was reached for the US to take over Greenland. Deadline reported the European Union would be holding an emergency meeting today over what it described as “blackmail.” Trump has repeatedly argued his interest in the ice-covered territory is rooted in military strategy, though many critics believe the real motivation is the seizure of untapped natural resources.

“It’s absurd, isn’t it? It’s a little man who got megalomania, and he’s trying to take the world. He took Venezuela, suddenly, and that’s for [energy company] Chevron. He’ll take Greenland for minerals. He’s a criminal.”

Skarsgård’s Sentimental Value director Joachim Trier (a Danish-Norwegian citizen) was also present and raised concerns about the implications of acquiring Greenland. “I agree with Stellan that it’s an absurd notion, and international law must be respected, because grinding that down will have such tremendous domino effects on how other superpowers will treat other countries. So the dominant effect of that is extremely worrying, if it is to happen,” he said.

Hollywood Does Not Stand with Donald Trump

The comments arrive after Mark Ruffalo and Judd Apatow criticized Trump’s ambitions at the 83rd Golden Globe Awards last weekend. Apatow was presenting the Best Director trophy on the night – ultimately won by One Battle After Another filmmaker Paul Thomas Anderson – when he argued the US was “a dictatorship now.”

On the red carpet, the Task actor wore a “Be Good” pin in tribute to the late Renee Good, who was killed by an ICE agent less than two weeks ago in Minneapolis. Per USA Today, Ruffalo pointed out the nation was in the “middle of a war with Venezuela,” which Trump “illegally invaded” in the first place. “[He] is telling the world that international law doesn’t matter to him. The only thing that matters to him is his own morality. The guy is a convicted felon or a convicted rapist. He’s a pedophile. He’s the worst human being. If we’re relying on this guy’s morality for the most powerful country in the world, then we’re all in a lot of trouble.”

George Clooney, talk show host Jimmy Kimmel, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, and Slow Horses star Jonathan Pryce have also had very public disputes with the POTUS over the past 12 months.
