State of Play: Will the Five-Year Tradition Continue?

Looking at Sony’s pattern since 2021, there’s a strong chance 2026 won’t break the streak.

PlayStation is reportedly planning another State of Play broadcast for February, according to the well-known and generally reliable insider NateTheHate. He didn’t go into detail about the focus of the show, which is said to be scheduled for the first half of the month, but he was confident that Sony is already counting on an event next month. PlayStation typically confirms these presentations only a day or two before they air, so we will probably not know for sure until sometime next week whether this information proves accurate.

Since 2021, PlayStation has held some form of State of Play presentation every February. The first February event was a general showcase highlighting upcoming titles such as Returnal, Deathloop, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, and Sifu. February 2022’s State of Play was fully dedicated to Gran Turismo 7, while February 2023 returned to a broader format, featuring games like Street Fighter 6 and Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The February 2024 broadcast focused specifically on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, though it was preceded by a general presentation on January 31. The general State of Play in 2025 showcased Saros, the release date for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, MindsEye, and several other titles.

Given that a February event has been part of PlayStation’s schedule for five consecutive years, it seems reasonable to expect the pattern to continue in 2026. That said, these showcases are not guaranteed every single year, so the trend could still be broken. For now, however, February appears to have become a regular fixture in PlayStation’s annual communication cycle.

The big question is whether this year’s show will be centered on a single game or take a more general approach. If it is game-focused, the third entry in the Final Fantasy remake trilogy could be a candidate, as could Saros, which is set to launch on April 30. It might also serve as one last major push of hype for Marathon ahead of its March release.
