Hamnet Breaks a Record

MOVIE NEWS – The makers of Hamnet have hardly been short on acclaim, but its 11 BAFTA nominations mark a record in the history of the British Academy’s awards.

The makers of Hamnet have hardly been short on acclaim, but its 11 BAFTA nominations mark a record in the history of the British Academy’s awards. It is the first time a film directed by a woman has been considered worthy of so many nominations. The Best Film-nominated Hamnet is directed by two-time Oscar winner Chloé Zhao (Nomadland – she won her statues as both director and producer). She has been nominated again for Best Director, and Jessie Buckley – who plays William Shakespeare’s grieving wife in Hamnet – could take home the BAFTA for Best Actress.

It previously came as a major surprise that Hamnet’s male star, Paul Mescal, did not receive an Oscar nomination for his performance, but he has now found consolation, as he is also a BAFTA contender.
Hamnet’s additional BAFTA nominations include: Outstanding British Film, Best Supporting Actress (Emily Watson), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Score (Max Richter), Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, and Best Make Up and Hair.

Hamnet, which has already won dozens of prestigious industry awards, has been nominated for eight Oscars.
