The mod based on Valve‘s 2007 game has officially launched on Steam, and, as expected, it has generated intense interest.
One of the best Team Fortress 2 mods has been picked up by Steam. GRN and YLW are joining the RED and BLU teams. Team Fortress 2 Classified (formerly TF2 Classic) has relaunched as an official Steam mod with its own store page. The revamped TF2 Classified now runs on the official TF2 SDK released by Valve last year. It is both retro – hence the old “Classic” name – and complementary; it takes the nearly 19-year-old shooter back to the pre-hat era while adding new weapons, modes, and a new class.
The Civilian is a brand-new special class based on an old Team Fortress character. Deliver him to the target almost unscathed in VIP mode. Use weapons from before TF2‘s release, such as the Nail Gun, Dynamite Pack, and Tranquilizer Gun, which have been redesigned to fit with existing weapons. Rampage through multi-team maps where GRN and YLW bring their unique (yet similar) brand of violence to Arena, King of the Hill, and other game modes. There are exclusive new game modes, including Domination and VIP Race, which are all playable on professional-quality official maps, with more to come.
Homemade weapons, such as springboards, anti-aircraft guns, bricks, and chains wrapped around fists, are not just simple accessories; they dramatically change the gameplay. There is extensive modding support, which allows players to customize the game’s appearance and servers to host advanced custom weapon packs and maps. There are numerous visual improvements, including enhanced textures, models, and mapping features. The restored cartoon-style shading was mostly absent in the retail release.
If you haven’t played Team Fortress 2 since its public debut in 2020 (or the earlier release in 2014), think of Team Fortress 2 Classified as a fresh start. It’s a cleaner, simpler version of TF2 with a few quality-of-life updates and new tools. It’s a great option for fans of TF2 who never quite understood all the wild weapons introduced after launch. The Steam release is going so well that it’s difficult to play. Nearly 10,000 players flooded the game at launch, exceeding the expectations of the Eminoma mod team.
The Soldier’s RPG has a more powerful rocket that flies in an aggressive arc. The Engineer’s buildable jump pads enhance team mobility. The Medic’s Rejuvinator replaces the Medigun with an Overwatch Baptiste-style healing grenade launcher. Team Fortress 2 Classified takes us back to the pre-live service era because it contains no microtransactions. One of its most promising features is the expanded custom server tools that allow community servers to install custom weapon packs, support advanced custom maps, and drastically change the game’s rules.
The team also plans to support the Steam Workshop, which will host client-side mods that allow us to easily customize Team Fortress 2, a sensitive issue in the base game.
