Ian McKellen May Have Spoiled a Huge Avengers: Doomsday Set Piece

MOVIE NEWS – Ian McKellen seemingly let something slip about Avengers: Doomsday, and it sounds like the kind of spectacle Marvel builds trailers around. At 86, he’s returning as Magneto 26 years after the first X-Men and 12 years after X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Ian McKellen may have accidentally dropped a spoiler about Avengers: Doomsday, and the implication is pretty jaw-dropping. At 86, McKellen is now the oldest actor to step back into a Marvel role, doing so 26 years after the first X-Men and 12 years after audiences last saw him in X-Men: Days of Future Past. Over the course of the X-Men films, Magneto has hauled around absurdly massive objects, from the Golden Gate Bridge to an entire baseball stadium’s worth of debris. For Avengers: Doomsday, though, it sounds like the Russo brothers want to raise the stakes even higher.

While speaking with Jake’s Takes, McKellen talked about what it was like filming Avengers: Doomsday. During the conversation, he appeared to reveal what could be a key action beat in the movie.

“I did destroy New Jersey the other day. Oh, I probably shouldn’t have said that.”

McKellen isn’t the first actor to unintentionally give away a detail about an Avengers: Doomsday sequence in an interview. Alan Cumming has already mentioned that his Nightcrawler will have a fight scene with Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic. Kelsey Grammer has also hinted that his Beast will share a scene with Pascal’s Reed Richards. With that in mind, the X-Men-leaning Avengers: Doomsday trailer may end up offering more context for how Magneto “destroying New Jersey” fits into the MCU.

The trailer shows Cyclops firing a huge optic blast amid the ruins of the Xavier Institute, surrounded by Sentinels. Rumors have swirled that Doctor Doom is the one controlling those Sentinels, which could prompt Magneto to strike back, using New Jersey as his battlefield. One possible scenario is that Magneto arrives in New Jersey, levels the area, but still can’t stop Doctor Doom. From there, he could turn to his longtime ally Professor X upstate, leading into the Sentinel attack glimpsed in the footage.

Among all the potential clashes in Avengers: Doomsday, fans are especially hoping for Magneto versus Doctor Doom, arguably two of Marvel Comics’ most famous villains. The New Jersey reference may also matter for a second reason. In the MCU’s 616 Sacred Timeline, New Jersey is not only home to Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel, one of the MCU’s first publicly identified mutants, but it’s also where Westview is located – the setting of WandaVision. There’s a chance Magneto could arrive in the Sacred Timeline and head to New Jersey in search of Wanda Maximoff / the Scarlet Witch, who was Magneto’s daughter in the comics until December 2014, shortly before Avengers: Age of Ultron. If Magneto shows up looking for a version of his daughter and tears through Westview, that could put him on a collision course with MCU heroes trying to stop him. In that case, audiences might not only see the Avengers dealing with Doctor Doom, but also going head-to-head with Magneto.
