MOVIE NEWS – Thousands of Baldur’s Gate 3 fans are upset about the series announcement, yet the game’s director has a different perspective. He never doubted that the narrative would continue in some form. Swen Vincke sees the continuation of the Baldur’s Gate saga as a positive development.
The news that HBO is developing a series set in the Baldur’s Gate universe has drawn mixed reactions. While many fans of the role-playing franchise are celebrating the upcoming adaptation, others are displeased that Larian Studios is entirely absent from the production. However, the founder of the developer and director of the latest entry anticipated this possibility and has expressed support for the team behind the show. Swen Vincke has suggested that, with or without them, they always understood the story would carry on.
Baldur’s Gate 3 was built with the idea that it could lead into a sequel.
As soon as the series was announced, Swen Vincke addressed the situation on social media. “It’s wild that a story which began in a small hotel conference room has grown into a narrative powerful enough to inspire an HBO series. We worked incredibly hard to make Baldur’s Gate 3 a game worthy of its legacy. Its characters and storylines are the result of many teams collaborating, and I think I can speak for them by saying we are fine with this and hope whatever comes next is driven by the same level of passion”, said the Larian Studios founder, helping calm the debate.
Even more intriguing was what he added afterward. “The endings of Baldur’s Gate 3 were designed so they could act as a narrative base for new adventures. There are countless directions the story could take. I’m curious to see which paths Craig Mazin [the series producer] and his team decide to explore”. In this context, it is worth noting that one of the few confirmed details about the HBO series is that it will feature both new and returning characters. As a result, it will take place shortly after the events of the RPG and function almost like a direct sequel.
It is also important to remember that Larian Studios always knew it would not control what happened after Baldur’s Gate 3. The franchise is part of Dungeons & Dragons, and the rights belong to Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro. This means that, while people are free to disagree with the decision, the brand was entitled to partner with other companies for a television adaptation. Situations like this may be one reason why Larian chose to step away from the franchise and focus on Divinity, an IP it fully owns.
That said, Swen Vincke has already confirmed that Craig Mazin has requested a meeting with him to exchange ideas and better understand Larian Studios’ plans for these characters. It is also worth mentioning that the developer had worked on Baldur’s Gate 4, so the HBO series might incorporate concepts that were intended for the now-canceled game. In any case, it seems audiences will still need to wait to find out which direction the production ultimately takes.
