Happinet Corporation has announced Brigandine: Abyss, a fantasy war strategy RPG that is heading to modern platforms and already has a Western publisher in place, with NIS America set to handle the release outside Japan.
Brigandine: Abyss is positioned as a brand-new entry in the long-running franchise, built around a completely original setting that is meant to be welcoming even for newcomers. The premise looks to the distant past: centuries ago, the Abyssloa Empire was halted by the mysterious power of the Brigandine. Now a new Abyssloa Empire rises from the ashes, poised to conquer the world once more, and it’s up to you to push back against the oncoming darkness.
The pitch leans heavily into large-scale conflict and campaign planning. You’ll manage resources, rally monsters to your side, and take the fight to the empire across one of six different story campaigns. If you’re looking for a more classic Brigandine-style setup, there’s also Mission Mode, where you can play as one of 24 different factions. Each faction comes with its own unique win conditions, creating a structure that can be approached either as a demanding tactical challenge or a more relaxed, long-form strategy grind. Either way, the game is being described as the kind of title that can easily stretch into hundreds of hours.
Regardless of whether you choose the story campaigns or Mission Mode, the core flow is split into two phases. During the Organization Phase, you arrange troops and allocate resources. During the Attack Phase, you take to the battlefield. Brigandine: Abyss retains the series’ distinctive hex-based, grid strategy gameplay and is designed to keep you thinking beyond simple unit trades. Success on the field will depend on how well you factor in skills, elemental attributes, and the way your armies develop over time.
The broader narrative loop remains a constant pressure point as you play. The Abyssloa Empire has risen again, and the game frames your campaign as a struggle to stop it before it spreads. You can choose from six story campaigns to uncover the truth – or keep it buried. Expanding your influence is described as a deliberate process: manage resources, maneuver your forces, forge alliances with monsters so you can stand against any opponent, then bring that planning to the battlefield and claim the rewards. Mission Mode takes the same idea and turns it into an endlessly replayable framework, built around 24 factions with 24 different paths to victory, whether you want to master one approach or attempt them all.
The staff lineup is also a notable part of the reveal. The team includes Makoto Yamamoto as director (known for the Sengoku Basara series), Masayuki Horikawa as supervisor (Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance), character designers Junko Kawano (Suikoden, Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes) and Niji Hayashi (Fire Emblem Heroes, Shadowverse), composer Rei Kondoh (Okami, Bayonetta, Fire Emblem: Three Houses), scenario writer Iduru Matsuno (the Sengoku Basara series), and producer Masaru Saito from Happinet Corporation.
In the West, NIS America will publish the game. Brigandine: Abyss is currently set to release this year on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
