God of War Live-Action Series Officially Begins Filming and Reveals the First Image of Kratos and Atreus

MOVIE NEWS – Back in 2005, Hollywood first signaled its interest in developing a live-action God of War. Twenty-one years later, after several failed attempts, the PlayStation adaptation is finally rolling: Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios have just announced production has started on Prime Video’s new series, and they have shared the first official look at Kratos and Atreus fully suited up.

As has been reported in recent months, Amazon’s big-budget production will star Ryan Hurst and Callum Vinson as Kratos and Atreus. Hurst is not unfamiliar to fans of the franchise’s last two entries, having portrayed Thor through voice work and motion capture in God of War: Ragnarök (2022). He also brings extensive TV experience, including multiple episodes of The Walking Dead. Vinson likewise has fiction credits, including Netflix’s The Night Agent.

God of War Has an Initial Two-Season Order on Prime Video

In today’s press release shared by Amazon and MGM Studios, the companies reiterate that the series – created in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions – has received an initial two-season order. That should be enough to adapt the two most recent titles developed under Cory Barlog at SIE Santa Monica Studio.

The word “initial” matters, because strong performance, or the arrival of a new installment in the saga, could push Prime Video to greenlight a third season or, just as plausibly, a prequel that takes us back to Greece. Time will tell.

The story follows Kratos and his son Atreus as they embark on a journey to scatter the ashes of Faye, wife and mother. “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father to be a better human.” There is no release window yet, but if everything goes well, the first episodes could be ready by mid-to-late 2027. The first two chapters will be directed by Frederick E.O. Toye, who has shown his eye on Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout. Ronald D. Moore, creator of Battlestar Galactica, serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer on this major adaptation.
