Assassin’s Creed Unity: Did the Current-Gen Patch Bring 4K Resolution?

Ubisoft kept its word and released an update yesterday for the more than ten-year-old Assassin’s Creed episode.

Assassin’s Creed Unity received a 60 FPS update for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series, which likely includes an undocumented 4K resolution update. Although Unity is a previous-generation title released in 2014 for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, the update makes the 11-year-old classic relevant again for players who want to experience the series’s old, simpler gameplay.

According to several online reports, yesterday’s patch for Assassin’s Creed Unity increases the resolution to 4K. While no one has verified the exact pixel count, the game’s PlayStation 5 update history references 4K resolution and 60 FPS gameplay. Users such as RayCharlizard on the ResetEra forum have shared screenshots taken on the PlayStation 5 Pro that suggest the resolution exceeds the original 900p resolution, though there is still no official confirmation of the exact internal resolution. We will probably have to wait for Digital Foundry‘s analysis.

The current update was announced in a blog post that we reported on yesterday. The post outlined the plans for the Assassin’s Creed franchise in the near future. As support for Assassin’s Creed Shadows slowly winds down, the French publisher is placing increasing emphasis on future games, including the darker, narrative-focused Hex. Additionally, after months of rumors, Ubisoft has finally confirmed the release of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, sharing the game’s first official illustration.

Assassin’s Creed Unity was released in a somewhat chaotic state at the end of 2014 — remember the meme where only the eyeballs and mouth of one of the characters were visible? — so this can be considered a big step forward. Hopefully, the frame rate will maintain a stable 60 FPS because it would be ridiculous otherwise.
