A new poll reveals that over 70% of PlayStation fans are in favor of Sony scaling back on porting its first-party exclusives to PC — just as reports suggest the company has already made exactly that decision.
A recent report revealed that after a few years of porting its exclusives to PC, Sony is now reverting to its old strategy. This means that upcoming releases like Ghost of Yotei, Saros, Wolverine, and more will likely remain PS5-only. In a poll by Push Square, over 70% of respondents voted in favor of exclusivity, while just 22% felt that PC ports still hold value.
It’s worth noting that even when Sony first started making PC ports, PlayStation fans were already against the decision. Now that the company appears to be walking it back, the community is firmly on board. The financial picture, however, tells a more complex story: the ports are estimated to have generated at least $2.3 billion in revenue — and at a relatively low cost, since PC ports are considerably cheaper to produce than original game development.
Strategic concerns appear to be driving the decision. Next-generation competitors — the Steam Machine and the Xbox Helix — are essentially Steam-running PCs, which would give them access to both Xbox and Steam PlayStation ports alike, posing a direct threat to the PlayStation ecosystem. By pulling back on PC ports, Sony is looking to preserve the distinct value of its console ahead of the next-generation platform wars.
