He claims that he has put Microsoft on the right path to ensure the success of the Redmond-based tech giant in the gaming industry.
Phil Spencer’s retirement as CEO of Microsoft Gaming came as quite a surprise. Despite an earlier rumor that Microsoft quickly dismissed, the 58-year-old executive appeared at the Xbox Developer Direct in January. Spencer received the D.I.C.E. Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022 for his contributions to the gaming industry. He worked at Microsoft for 38 years. He started his career working on projects such as the Encarta digital encyclopedia before joining the Xbox team as Managing Director of Microsoft Game Studios EMEA. He was later promoted to general manager of the entire Microsoft Game Studios division and, eventually, to executive vice president of Microsoft Gaming.
During the first half of his career at Microsoft, Spencer worked directly with game developers on projects such as the often-forgotten action RPG Too Human. The Xbox 360 exclusive was developed by Silicon Knights, the Canadian studio behind Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, and Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes. It was not a huge success, mainly due to its troubled development – it was originally announced for the PS1, then switched to the Nintendo GameCube, and finally targeted the Xbox 360. However, the game’s director, Denis Dyack, told WCCFTech that Spencer directly oversaw its completion. Dyack spoke positively about Spencer and his legacy, claiming that Spencer laid the foundation for the Xbox’s success.
“I knew Phil very well. He actually oversaw and completed Too Human. We talked about it a lot. He was a great guy. He did a great job. He really grew Xbox. He transformed Microsoft’s gaming division from a medium-sized player into one of the biggest in the world. He was a gamer at heart. The market is getting very tough now. They’re going to face a lot of headwinds, so the new person coming in is going to have it tough. But he positioned Microsoft on solid ground to succeed,” said Dyack.
Dyack’s experiences with Spencer are similar to the comments shared by many of his colleagues in the industry. Nevertheless, it is hard to argue that Xbox’s overall strategy has been clear in recent years.
