Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro: Is the CPU Disappointing Despite the 2nm Process?

TECH NEWS – However, the GPU and AI capabilities may compensate for the processor’s weak performance.

Qualcomm’s transition to TSMC’s 2nm manufacturing process is expected to significantly improve the performance of the CPU and GPU when the company officially unveils the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 models later this year. Unfortunately, according to a rumor, this won’t be the case. Despite the transition to a new architecture and CPU cluster, computational performance won’t be significantly higher than that of the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Fortunately, GPU updates may offset the SoC’s weak computational capabilities.

Qualcomm has switched from the older 2+6 CPU cluster used by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 to a new 2+3+3 configuration. Based on this data, we can expect a more efficient SoC that will provide sufficient headroom for the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro to operate at 5 GHz. These frequencies offer significantly higher single- and multicore performance gains. However, according to a leak from Fixed-Focus Digital Cameras, these specifications result in less than a 20% increase in CPU performance. Instead, rumors suggest that Qualcomm is releasing significant updates to the Adreno 850 GPU. Not only does it feature a larger cache, but it also supports LPDDR6 RAM.

There are rumors that the GPU bus width will increase by 50%, and that GPU memory will be expanded. This suggests that Qualcomm may have hit limits with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro CPU and is therefore focusing on other areas. The increased GPU memory and cache are expected to improve the device’s AI capabilities and enhance the gaming experience. Given how easily the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 handles AAA games with emulation software, it will be exciting to see the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro perform similar tasks at a higher frame rate.

That said, an increase in performance of less than 20% isn’t too shabby. However, since this isn’t official yet, take it with a grain of salt.
