Dune Awakening: Funcom Is Pivoting to PvE!

Many changes are coming, and the studio remains committed to the console versions, albeit with some modifications.

Funcom, the developer of Dune Awakening, has outlined several significant upcoming changes to the game. First and foremost, they emphasized that the game will focus primarily on PvE. According to Funcom, over 80% of players engage exclusively with PvE content. This forced the studio to rethink the previous intertwining of PvE and PvP, treating PvP, the player-versus-player segment, as an optional element.

Starting with update 1.3.20.0, the following changes will take effect. All PvP zones in the Hagga Basin will be disabled on all official servers. Each official world will have separate Deep Desert instances to choose from. There will be a PvE instance for a pure survival and exploration experience without player-versus-player combat. There will be no PvP in any of the lines, including Shipwrecks. Alternatively, there will be a PvP instance featuring a classic high-stakes environment with open-world conflict in tiers B through I. To ensure that rewards are proportional to risk, the yield from mining and spice harvesting will increase by 2.5x in PvP zones.

The long-awaited self-hosted solution is finally here. The first version, which will soon be tested, requires a few extra configuration steps and offers limited customization options, though more will be added later. These settings include resource gathering speeds, adjustable limits on base-building materials and item durability, and options for base decay.

A complete guide to setting up and customizing your own server will be available in the patch notes when the feature is released. However, Funcom notes that this first version of the feature is technically more complex than most other games and requires a computer running Microsoft Windows Pro with Hyper-V in order to run the servers on a Linux virtual machine, VM.

Dune Awakening is still in development for consoles, though it will be released later than originally planned. Funcom initially expected to launch the game in June, one year after its PC debut. However, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions are now expected to arrive in late 2026.
