From Software’s 2019 games have had a huge impact on the gaming industry, and the same can be said for their next game, Elden Ring.
Wo Long and Lies of P have already taken a few things from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, which even inspired Resident Evil 4 Remake, as the parry system in Capcom’s game was very similar. But when two RPG heavyweights, BioWare and Obsidian, take some elements from From Software’s game to make their RPGs even more powerful, that’s pretty badass!
The big thing about Sekiro was that it focused on dodging attacks rather than blocking them. It also had a stagger bar, and when it ran out, your opponent would “open up” and you could quickly drain HP. For Dragon Age: The Veilguard, BioWare confirmed that it would have a parry system, and we got a better look at the 11 minute Gamescom video that added high damage counter attacks with attack blocking, and the Warrior also used a gameplay enhancement that gave a fire damage buff for each successful attack block. The Warrior will have a much tighter parry time, but will also have a shield to protect against attacks, and the Rogue will not have a shield, but will have a much longer parry time.
Confessors will also have a stacking system. Our attacks will charge up a streak that can be used to put our opponents into a weakened state, making them more vulnerable (something we saw in another FromSoftware game, Armored Core 6). In Dragon Age: The Veilguard, we can knock out a stunned enemy with a finishing move (similar to the scene-ending moves in Dragon Age: Origins).
So BioWare and Obsidian prove that it’s no crime to take a gameplay element from a good game. Especially if the execution is not a problem.
