This comment is hard to believe coming from the creator of Resident Evil, but if you think about it, there might be a reason behind what Shinji Mikami said.
We’ve already quoted from WCCFTech’s interview with Goichi Suda (Suda51), which the site conducted alongside Mikami at Gamescom, as we reported yesterday that the veteran developer would like to bring back which franchise, but it wouldn’t be up to him. But now we’re talking about another interview Mikami gave to Eurogamer. He says that there’s little point in Dino Crisis existing these days. He was surprised at how many people would like to see the franchise in a new guise, as he feels that the coolness of dinosaurs and what you can do with them has essentially been covered by Monster Hunter in recent years.
No word on a sequel to Dino Crisis. Capcom tried to make up for it with Exoprimal, a multiplayer third-person shooter, and while the reviews weren’t too bad, it didn’t quite hit the mark in terms of nostalgia, so many people turned to Dino Crisis instead. Monster Hunter went on to become one of Capcom’s most popular franchises. As of March of this year, more than 25 million copies of Monster Hunter: World had been sold, and Monster Hunter Wilds, which will be released sometime in 2025, is gaining traction.
Capcom’s poll revealed that the most people wanted to see the Dino Crisis franchise revived (80769 votes). One of the questions asked which game Capcom is most popular with, and out of the 251,148 respondents, 109,978 said Dino Crisis (the franchise came in second). However, Resident Evil creator Mikami hasn’t worked for Capcom for nearly two decades and now works for Kamuy. He was one of the producers of the first Dino Crisis.
So, just like with God Hand, it’s all up to Capcom, because the Japanese publisher holds all the cards.
