Destiny 2 is facing its most critical period ever. The game’s player count on Steam has plummeted to a new all-time low, with just 25,000 players logged in concurrently — the lowest in its history on the platform.
In just over two months, Destiny 2 has lost more than 250,000 players on PC, marking a significant decline that has left it at its lowest point ever.
It’s been more than two months since the release of The Final Shape, the latest expansion for Destiny 2. Initially, Bungie was riding high on the expansion’s release, despite some early issues. However, since then, the number of players has been steadily dropping, which is somewhat typical for this kind of game once the initial hype dies down and many players finish the new content.
What stands out now, however, is the dramatic decrease in concurrent player numbers on SteamDB. At the time of writing, Destiny 2 has only 25,447 concurrent players, the lowest count since its 2019 release. This drop is especially striking compared to post-expansion periods for previous DLCs like Beyond Light, The Witch Queen, or Lightfall, when average player numbers remained between 60,000 to 130,000.
The Final Shape, which launched on June 7, initially brought back nearly 200,000 players. But by July and August, the decline was so sharp that more than 250,000 players had left within just 60 days. This trend appears set to continue through September, leaving Bungie’s next steps uncertain for this game-as-a-service.
Bungie’s Next Moves
Bungie has assured fans of its dedication to Destiny 2, hinting at an upcoming reveal of their “next multi-year journey.” They’ve acknowledged potential “bumps” along the way, but have promised to keep players informed and attentive to their feedback. Meanwhile, the studio is also focusing on Marathon, a PvP extraction shooter slated for release in 2025, which could be influencing their current strategy.
