Bungie’s next game (while Destiny 2 continues to be developed by the Sony-owned studio) is already a cause for concern, as something has been leaked.
Last May, almost a year and a half ago, Bungie announced the reboot of Marathon, which will be a PvP extraction shooter. The Game Post, citing sources, claims that the game will cost $40, making it the same price as the recently flopped Concord. And yet, Bungie has a successful example of a free-to-play, microtransaction-packed game in Destiny 2.
Bungie and Sony recently talked about pricing for the Marathon reboot, and they probably discussed it in more detail because Concord, Sony’s last live service game, was a short-lived failure. There has been a lot of talk and scandal about Marathon, mainly because of the new director Joe Ziegler. Many people believe that the game will be too similar to Valorant or Overwatch 2, and this is a trap that Concord could fall into.
According to several sources at The Game Post, the game will not be “hero-centric”. Everyone will have different skills and special abilities, so they will be thoroughly differentiated. The gameplay structure is more like Escape from Tarkov, but with a Bungie twist. There are only two playable maps, and it’s not certain if there will be as many at launch, or maybe more. Internal playtesting has been going on for the last few months and the feedback is relatively positive, but it does indicate that the game is not worth the price, so if the price doesn’t change, the same thing could happen as with Concord: release: it could fall…
Morale is low in the studio and developers are increasingly frustrated with management.
