[SOP 2024] Palworld: Will the Game Still Be Released on PS5 Despite Legal Battles?! [VIDEO]

The game has been available on Xbox and PC since January, but it has now been confirmed: Palworld is launching today on PS5!

Released in January via Steam Early Access and Xbox Game Preview, the monster-catching survival game Palworld was an instant hit. According to the developer Pocketpair, it has already attracted 25 million players in the first month!

However, the game’s massive success sparked controversy due to perceived similarities between the character designs of Palworld and the Pokémon games.

The game will be added to the PlayStation 5 store later today.

The release comes despite Nintendo and The Pokémon Company recently announcing a patent lawsuit against the game. Nintendo and TPC filed the suit in Tokyo District Court last week, seeking an injunction against infringement and damages “on the grounds that Palworld… infringes multiple patent rights.”

In a later statement, Pocketpair, the developer of Palworld, said it would fight and believed it was “truly unfortunate that we will be forced to allocate significant time to matters unrelated to game development.”

“We will do our utmost for our fans, and to ensure that indie game developers are not hindered or discouraged from pursuing their creative ideas,” they added. Since the lawsuit filed last week is a patent lawsuit — and not a copyright lawsuit — it suggests that Nintendo and The Pokémon Company’s complaint is likely to focus on gameplay inventions rather than character design similarities.

As noted in its statement, Pocketpair claims that it is “unaware of the specific patents we are accused of infringing upon” and has not been notified.
