Although Nintendo hasn’t announced its next-generation hardware yet, more and more information is leaking out in one form or another about the as-yet-unnamed console, which is why we’re calling it Switch 2 (for lack of a better idea).
A deeper analysis of the Switch 18.0.0 firmware might suggest that the Nintendo Switch 2 will retroactively support its predecessor. There have been several rumors about this over the past few months. This time, a Famiboards user, Pokemaniac, has reported what he believes could indicate that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support one of the best-selling platforms.
The firmware update added support for a new type of mount point, a way to expose files to games, classified as “compat”. This new type of mount point could be used for higher quality assets for the Nintendo Switch 2, shader caches, making certain files contextually available as part of a unified file system for cross-generation games, protecting critical files in next-gen consoles from piracy and emulation, or potentially injecting compatibility shims as part of the backwards compatibility system.
The more rumors that circulate around the Nintendo Switch 2, the harder it will be for fans to wait for this platform, as the Japanese company really has very little information to share. Among the most important is that everyone will be wondering WHEN the platform will hit the stores, and they will also be interested in HOW MUCH the console will be available for purchase. This is more important information than the name of the console (hopefully not something weird like Super Switch or Switch U).
All of this is not official yet, but backwards compatibility is logical: without it, the Switch and all the games sold on it would be left in the dust!
