MOVIE NEWS – Ten years after the last failure, RoboCop is getting a series on Prime Video, which James Wan will produce.
RoboCop is undoubtedly one of the greatest heroes in the history of science fiction films. Since the original film’s release in 1987, there have been three more films and four series: one live-action, one mini-series and two animated series. (Not to mention video games, of which last year’s Rogue City, for example, performed exceptionally well.)
However, the 2014 reboot of the original, starring Joel Kinnaman, was a flop with both critics and audiences. So, in order to improve their reputation, they tried to make a direct sequel to the 1987 original, RoboCop Returns. However, this never materialized.
Now the legendary hero is being revived for a live-action series on Prime Video with producer James Wan.
According to Variety, the showrunner for the RoboCop series will be Peter Ocko (Moonhaven). He will work as both a writer and executive producer. Atomic Monster producers Michael Clear and Rob Hackett are also involved in the production. On behalf of the company, Danielle Bozzone oversees the project. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
As many have reported, in 2018 Neill Blomkamp was approached to develop a new film. However, barely a year later, Blomkamp himself announced that he was no longer involved in the project:
“This is the only film where I basically tried to imitate Paul Verhoeven’s directorial style,” he explained in an interview with JoBlo in August 2023. “I wanted it to feel like the day after the original story. It’s like Dick Jones fell out of the window on Monday and this happened on Tuesday. It was literally like it all started the next morning. So it was a direct sequel, in exactly the same style.”
In any case, we are curious to see what he can get out of the character of Prime Video’s RoboCop. Based on what a great job they’ve done with the Fallout series, I’d say there’s hope…
