TECH NEWS – Although the technology was tested on one of the Cupertino-based company’s products, it was not used in the end due to the still unfavorable situation.

For the next-generation Apple Watch Ultra, the company tried microLEDs, but in the end, Apple backed out due to the high cost despite the small display. Now, however, there is a rumor that the company is not abandoning the technology as it tries to use it in smartwatches, and the rumor even hints at a possible start date for mass production.

The smartglasses could be on the shelves sometime in 2027, but there could be several hurdles to get there. On Twitter, Jukanlosreve wrote that the microLED will be in the AR glasses. Mass production will start sometime in 2026, but he did not clarify whether displays or smart glasses will be produced then. In any case, microLEDs are a very expensive proposition, but AR glasses will be a big deal even for Apple: they have to be light enough to weigh just a few grams more than an average pair of glasses so that they are not annoying to wear.

Apple has not given up on Micro LED technology.

Meanwhile, the Apple Watch Ultra is also in the pipeline and is rumored to be available in 2026, but Jukanlosreve did not say where he got this information, but it’s an ambitious idea. That’s no surprise, considering Apple is one of the world’s biggest tech companies.

In the smart glasses space, Meta has already unveiled its own device, but we’ve also heard that it could be years away (we’ve covered these issues in more detail), so 2027 seems like a realistic launch window, as the technology could improve enough to get everything working properly by then.
