Masashi Tsuboyama is very happy about the existence of Silent Hill 2 Remake, as it revives Konami’s iconic survival horror.
In a few hours, thousands of players will (re)discover the story of the iconic Silent Hill 2 through the new remake. The community feared that the studio behind the project, Bloober Team, would not be able to capture the essence of the survival horror that was so popular in 2001. However, according to critics, the Polish team has created a game that lives up to expectations. Now, the opinion of the director of the original game has also come to light: no matter how it turns out, he is satisfied with the revival of the franchise.
Masashi Tsuboyama, who led the legendary Team Silent during the development of Silent Hill 2, reflected on the remake’s characteristics in an X thread: “Games and technology are constantly evolving, resulting in significant differences in constraints and levels of expression.
This is a common issue with media arts in general, but it is not easy to maintain and appreciate the environment of the time” – the specialist begins his posts. “I think the value of the remake is that a new generation can play it. As a creator, I’m very happy about it. It’s been 23 years! Even if you don’t know the original, you can just enjoy the remake as it is. Whether it’s good or bad doesn’t affect the original.”
“The differences between the original and the remake, 4K, Photorealism, the [preorder] bonus headgear, etc. are all mediocre.”
“Who is this promotion going to appeal to? It seems like they’re not doing enough to convey the appeal of the work to the generation that doesn’t know Silent Hill,” continues Tsuboyama. “The thing to note is the change in camera (perspective). The change in playable camera has a significant impact on many aspects, combat, level design, etc. While the impact on the story may be relatively small, it brings a big change to the playfeel of the game.”
“To be honest, I’m not satisfied with the playable camera from 23 years ago,” admits Tsuboyama on the X thread. “Depth and angle were limited by the processing load. It was a continuous process of hard work that was not rewarded. But that was the limit. The over-the-shoulder view definitely adds to the sense of realism. In other words, it makes me want to try playing the even more immersive remake of Silent Hill 2!!”
Bloober Team wants to continue working with Konami after Silent Hill 2 Remake
In fact, Silent Hill 2 Remake may be the starting point for Bloober Team’s close relationship with Konami. Although, indeed, the players’ opinions are not yet known, the studio also responsible for The Medium hopes that “this is not the end of the joint adventure with Konami”. In other words, the Polish developer is confident that it will be able to conclude new agreements with the owners of the Metal Gear series in the future.
