Wonder Woman Star Still Frustrated Over Warner Bros.’ Decision to Cancel Third Movie

MOVIE NEWS – Despite the critical and commercial success of Wonder Woman when it debuted in 2017, the series starring Gal Gadot has vanished from the DC Universe. Actress Connie Nielsen, who portrayed Hippolyta in Patty Jenkins’ adaptation, has voiced her disappointment with Warner Bros.’ decision to cancel the franchise, calling it “crazy.”

The third Wonder Woman film was officially canceled in December 2022, but there’s still plenty of bitterness surrounding the decision to end the franchise’s future. Despite facing numerous challenges as a female-directed, female-centric superhero film, the first Wonder Woman grossed $800 million globally and won a Hugo Award, setting a new standard for superhero movies. Although the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, didn’t perform nearly as well, Warner Bros. had already greenlit a third film, understanding the struggles of releasing a movie in a world affected by COVID-19. However, internal restructuring at Warner Bros. led to the project’s demise, as DC Films transitioned into DC Studios, new leadership took over, and a new cinematic universe was launched.

Speaking to Den of Geek, Nielsen expressed her confusion over the cancellation: “These were incredible films, and I just don’t understand why they wouldn’t want to invest in them,” she said. “If I were a businessperson, I’d say that’s money left on the table.” She also noted that the Wonder Woman movies had much lower budgets compared to other DC projects, adding: “It’s a shame. I really hope they reconsider because this decision is insane.”

“A billion dollars is sitting on the table. Not meeting the demand from fans and making them happy is something I just don’t get at all.”

What Impact Will Wonder Woman’s Cancelation Have on Warner Bros. and the DCU?

The decision to cancel Wonder Woman seems even more baffling in light of the Joker sequel’s massive failure. With a lower budget, an established fanbase, and a highly acclaimed director, Wonder Woman all but guarantees box office success, especially considering the gender diversity it brings to the superhero genre. Nielsen isn’t the only one shocked by the franchise’s abrupt end — both Chris Pine and Gal Gadot have voiced their disappointment. Needless to say, Wonder Woman’s absence is a questionable move for Warner Bros., which is already trying to recover from the disastrous reception of Joker: Folie à Deux.

Despite the backlash, it appears unlikely that Warner Bros. will reverse its decision, as none of their upcoming projects feature the Amazon warrior. However, fans may find some consolation in the news that a spin-off series focusing on other Amazons — including Nielsen’s character — is reportedly in development.
