Aaron Greenberg, Xbox’s VP of Games Marketing, recently made a very divisive statement (which was not well received by the public), and now he’s responded.
Banjo-Kazooie was released for the Nintendo 64 in 1998. After Super Mario 64, the N64 got another great 3D platformer that is still loved by many to this day. It’s no wonder that Rare released a sequel, Banjo-Tooie, in 2000, which was just as well received. A couple of spin-offs followed on the Game Boy Advance, and in 2008, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts arrived on the Xbox 360, but despite good reviews, the public was not unanimous in its support. The Banjo franchise never got a proper third installment. (Yooka-Laylee can only be considered a spiritual sequel).
Microsoft owns the IP and hasn’t really bothered with it. And Greenberg was speaking at a Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 event. There was a question about which franchise the audience would like to see revived. One fan said Banjo-Kazooie. Greenberg’s response was blunt: “Nobody cares about Banjo-Kazooie. Since this is a clearly unprovable, or rather, false statement, it is no wonder that Greenberg had to react on Twitter…
Correct, I absolutely know how much Banjo-Kazooie means to our fans and gamers everywhere. It holds a special place in my heart, growing up playing these classic games. 💚🪕💚

@JayWood2010 wrote that Greenberg’s comment was rather sarcastic, which everyone misunderstood, and that he didn’t think he would say such a thing in public. In response, Greenberg wrote: “Right, I absolutely know how much Banjo-Kazooie means to our fans and gamers everywhere. It holds a special place in my heart, as I grew up playing these classic games. So he clarified what he meant.
Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie have both received HD remasters and are available in the Rare Replay Collection. (This pack is still Xbox One exclusive; where’s the PC port?) Banjo and Kazooie are DLC characters from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. A third installment has been rumored, and it’s definitely not something Double Fine is working on.
