Players Win: Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 Eases Difficulty After Backlash

Things have returned to normal in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. Just a few days ago, players were up in arms over Update 4.0, which made the game more challenging on higher difficulties by reducing the parry window for some of the most popular weapons and raising the difficulty in Operations mode. After the wave of player criticism, Saber Interactive has reversed course, restoring the values that worked so well in earlier versions of the game.

Saber Interactive revealed the news in the patch notes for Update 4.1, which also announces the introduction of new Public Test Servers—a feature designed to test new content both technically and for player feedback before full implementation. “Regardless of the feedback, we are grateful that you are so passionate about Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. The key takeaway for me personally is that once the game is released, it is no longer the developers’ game. It is yours first and foremost.” writes Dmitriy Grigorenko, the game’s director.

Update 4.1 Resets Difficulty

Grigorenko went on to explain the reasoning behind the much-criticized 4.0 patch and the changes introduced in the new update. “When the game launched in September, the win rate on Ruthless difficulty was over 60%. Weeks later, with the changes in Patch 3.0, that same win rate jumped to over 80%, and we received a lot of feedback saying the game had become too easy—even on its hardest difficulty.”

“With Patch 4.0, our goal was to adjust enemy spawning to increase the number of opponents rather than just buff their health again. Unfortunately, this affected the easier difficulty levels as well,” Grigorenko continued. “For example, the win rate on the easiest difficulty dropped from 95% to 93% after Patch 4.0. That may not sound like much, but numbers aren’t everything. Your feedback made it clear that the game became more intense and stressful at lower difficulties, and this was never our intention.”

“This is why we are reversing these changes. Enemy spawn rates on Low, Medium, and Heavy difficulties will revert to pre-Patch 4.0 levels, while Ruthless difficulty will see a significant reduction to strike a balance between the game’s original challenge and the ‘easier’ experience introduced with Patch 3.0.”

Beyond the difficulty adjustments, Saber Interactive has also focused on other game aspects. Update 4.1 increases weapon damage by 10%, improves player armor in Merciless mode, and raises bot damage against bosses by 30%. Lastly, the development team has fixed several bugs in the game.
