It’s Official: Alien: Romulus Gets a Sequel – Which Characters Will Return?!

MOVIE NEWS – The director of Alien: Romulus confirmed the fact of the sequel, and the head of Fox confirmed the returning characters…

Alien: Romulus brought the franchise back into the good graces of critics and viewers after it premiered in August. After the successful cinema premiere and digital release, it seems that we can already expect news of the sequel. We can treat it as official information that he is the director of the film and two stars loved by fans.

According to an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Fox CEO Steve Asbell was asked about the future of the Alien franchise after Romulus, and fans will be happy to hear that the studio is already working on the idea of a sequel. He admits that the contract with director Fede Álvarez hasn’t been signed yet, but they are very close, and he and the studio have an idea that they are currently working on.

Asbell also revealed that Cailee Spaeny and David Johnson, who played Rain and Andy respectively, will also return if it turns out.

“We’re working on a sequel idea now. We haven’t closed our deal with Fede [Álvarez], but we’re going to, and he has an idea that we’re working on. The two survivors, Rain and Andy, played by Cailee Spaeny and David Johnson, were real highlights of the film. And so I always think of it like, ‘Wow, where do people want to see them go next?’ We know there’s going to be aliens. We know there’s going to be great horror set pieces. But I feel in love with both of them and I want to see what their story is.”

Álvarez previously said that he and his co-screenwriter Rodo Sayagues already have ideas for a Romulus sequel. But they wanted to see how the film would affect the audience before making a sequel. He also said what studio bosses don’t like to hear when he stated that he doesn’t want to make a sequel in two years. You want to give time between the two parts to breathe. We’ll see if he sticks to it, or if 20th Century Studios pushes it a bit.

Alien: Romulus is “the perfect marriage of Alien and Aliens”

Alien: Romulus, despite some viewers complaining about too much fan service, really took the franchise back to its tense and scary roots while also giving us some great action sequences, making it a fun hybrid of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens. The end result impressed both critics and audiences. The film scored a substantial 80% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $105.3 million US and $350.8 million internationally on an $80 million budget.

That’s not a bad performance at all for a movie that was initially slated to go straight to the Hulu streaming channel, skipping theatres. No wonder 20th Century Studios wants a sequel and wants to keep Álvarez at the studio. Scott himself, after watching the film, was so impressed by Romulus that he believed the director would be making more films in the franchise for quite some time to come…
