Meta Collaborates with US Government on Artificial Intelligence Initiatives

TECH NEWS – Mark Zuckerberg’s company will help the US government’s multi-departmental approach to deploying AI…

Zuckerberg recently announced that its artificial intelligence model, called Llama, will be used by the US government to improve the efficiency of government operations. Improving processes through AI-integrated capabilities can help achieve this. This collaboration could be a big step in enabling AI applications to bring data-driven, responsive processes to government.

In Meta’s quarterly earnings report, Zuckerberg explained how Meta will work with the U.S. government, which raised many questions. For example, which parts of the government will use the Llama model and for what. AI applications can be quite diverse, so it could be used for data management, regulatory research, environmental monitoring, or something like that. It’s not yet clear whether military purposes will be covered, which could raise a lot of ethical and operational concerns.

The Verge learned more from spokeswoman Faith Eischen via email. She mentioned a partnership between the company and the US State Department to use Llama to solve problems as diverse as reliable electricity and access to clean water. They plan to reach out to several departments, including education, to see how they can make the financial process easier for students.

The spokesperson also clarified the basis of the partnership, claiming that no payments were involved. Meta has been pushing the U.S. government to use Llama at a time when the political climate seems tense, with Donald Trump threatening to jail Zuck despite his efforts to remain politically aloof. Meta’s move in this direction could potentially help ease tensions and expand the company’s broader efforts, which could ultimately change AI platforms, but could also trigger more investigations due to the increased attention. Regardless of how this plays out, it’s a big step for the company, especially given its plans to continue spending on its AI initiatives through 2025.
