The term “another version” is funny, especially when you consider that we’re talking about Virtua Fighter 5, of which there are many versions…
A few weeks ago, SEGA announced that a new Virtua Fighter was in the works… but that’s not what we meant! The Japanese publisher has announced that the franchise is returning to PC. It’s based on the previously PlayStation-exclusive Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown, and will support a 60 FPS frame rate in addition to 4K resolution, and will also feature re-balancing for the first time in 13 years. Rollback netcode will also be part of the package, so those who connect to the internet via Wi-Fi will not be at a disadvantage.
According to the Steam page for Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O., there will be 19 playable characters, each with a unique fighting style. You can also customize their look with costumes and accessories. There will also be an Arcade mode, Rank Match mode, Training and Versus. Custom online leagues and tournaments can be created for up to 16 players, and for those who just want to watch the fights, the spectator mode is recommended.
Virtua Fighter 5: R.E.V.O. doesn’t have much information other than that, but SEGA has said that Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown will receive a 2.0 update. You can check out the opening cinematic of the new version below, which sheds some light on the new content. At around two and a half minutes, the video features some iconic characters.
Virtua Fighter 5 was first released on consoles in February 2007 on the PlayStation 3 (Version B), followed by the Xbox 360 (Version C) in October. A Final Showdown edition was released on both consoles in June 2012, followed by PlayStation 4’s Ultimate Showdown in June 2021, which ran on Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio’s Dragon Engine.
After all that, it’s a bit of a joke to see so many versions of a single game.
