A job posting reveals the element that Striking Distance Studios is planning to include in its next game, and the engine won’t come as a surprise.
We’ve heard repeatedly that another project is in the pipeline after The Callisto Protocol, and it’s certain that the studio will use Unreal Engine 5 for it. Considering that a lot of studios are using Epic Games’ technology instead of their own engine these days (to take just one example, CD Projekt RED dropped REDengine, and maybe that’s why they’re not very inclined to give Cyberpunk 2077 a PlayStation 5 Pro patch…), the choice of Striking Distance seems perfectly logical.
Their job ad is for an intern level designer. Responsibilities include designing and documenting gameplay scenarios that can support both single-player and cooperative elements. This is certainly not a one-time thing, as they also expect the ability to understand multiplayer cooperative gameplay and mission design mechanics. So Striking Distance Studios is surely planning a co-op twist for their next game…
The Callisto Protocol did not have any co-op elements, so the developers have since changed their tune. Considering that Dead Space 3 had co-op (and it worked quite well), it’s understandable that the studio would want to try it. But let’s not forget that the game is still in the early stages of development, so we’ll have to wait a long time before we hear more about it. It will probably be a year or two before the studio even announces this game!
The Callisto protocol at least supports the PlayStation 5 Pro, so if you own Sony’s half-generation console, you’ll not only have the option to get a 60fps frame rate at 4K resolution, but also the option to play at 8K, but at 30fps (a la No Man’s Sky).
The next Striking Distance game is not official yet!
