Berto Ritger, Region Director and Senior Area Designer at Obsidian Entertainment, talked to Gamesradar about what he thinks makes an RPG special and not an easily forgotten experience.
According to Ritger, the uniqueness of the genre is not so much about the combat experience, but something else that makes it special: “I think the core of RPGs that makes them special is the missable content, to be honest, and that makes the experience so much more personal to how you play the game. When you talk to someone like, ‘Oh, I found this thing under the docks. There’s this little secret under there on the east side of the docks that you can find. And you can also climb up to the top, and there’s stuff up there.
But if you find it and your friend doesn’t, they’ve found something else, and it creates a very interesting dialog about the game. We want to draw your attention to things that we want you to engage with. The lighthouse is very tall, and so everybody is going to see a big, tall thing and want to climb it. And so we want to support that as well. And you can do that and you can jump into the ocean if you want to. And so we try to get your attention that way,” Ritger said.
According to Ritger, the key to a successful RPG lies in the content, which may not be obvious at first glance. This makes sense, because if there’s an area that doesn’t seem that interesting at first, and then someone finds out that there’s something exciting there, it can drive online communication about the game (a great example of this is Silent Hill 2 Remake, whose secrets have yet to be revealed; we wrote about that recently), and it can also drive up player numbers and thus replayability.
Avowed will be released on February 18 for Xbox Series and PC, but Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will be able to access it through the subscription service from day one.
