A former Rockstar developer who worked on GTA San Andreas has explained why there won’t be too many interiors to explore in GTA VI…
It’s been over a year since the trailer for the next Rockstar Games game was released, but the anticipation for Grand Theft Auto VI is growing stronger every day. The company’s next big open-world game aims to have a highly detailed map, with different locations and secrets to discover. As with Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA VI will also feature more interiors to explore. However, this practice should be approached with caution.
Why might filling GTA VI with explorable interiors be a problem?
Obbe Vermeij, a former Rockstar developer who worked on GTA IV and San Andreas, answered a fan’s question about whether it’s possible to have “splentiful interiors to explore in GTA VI” with today’s technology, since “a lot of people desire”. The answer from the former technical director of GTA IV surprised many players, as they did not expect that this was not a completely good idea.
“You would have thought it’s possible. The thing with procedurally generated interiors is that they often feel a bit samey. We dabbled before for SA and 4 but ultimately gave up on the idea,” he explains, saying that procedural is not always the ideal solution for a game of this size. Perhaps the ideal would be to choose interiors created “by hand”, with human ingenuity and creativity.
However, this also probably means that there will be much less space to explore.
The idea, or the players’ dream, to explore all the buildings or houses in a GTA game seems a bit utopian. However, it would not be strange if Rockstar’s work surprised us in this sense, and they designed many interiors to explore. Procedural generation has also developed significantly in the last decade and a half. And it’s quite likely that the developers of GTA VI will strive to increase the number of human-designed interiors. Even if not necessarily at the same level as the Elder Scrolls or Fallout games…
