Released less than a month ago, GSC Game World’s game is already turning a profit, which bodes well for the Ukrainian team…
A few days after its release, the studio announced that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl has already sold over 1 million copies. It should be pointed out that this is the SALES result, and on top of that a lot of people have played it on both PC and Xbox Series on Xbox Game Pass. However, this is a title that has been in development for a long time, so it is fair to ask: can it make a profit?
Maksym Krippa, an investor in GSC Game World, told Ukrainian Forbes that S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl is already making money for the team, despite tens of millions of dollars spent on both development and marketing. Krippa also confirmed that they are in talks with Netflix for a possible adaptation. Given the number of IPs we’ve seen adapted into movies and series (The Witcher, or if you had to go post-apocalyptic, Fallout, though that’s Amazon’s, not Netflix’s… or The Last of Us, but that’s HBO’s), it’s understandable that they’d want in on the action.
We have seen a lot of adaptations from the gaming industry lately. The Sonic movies or Uncharted are positive, but The Super Mario Bros. Movie easily surpassed them. And compared to that, Borderlands underperformed. In terms of series, there are also some somewhat divisive adaptations. Think Twisted Metal or Like a Dragon: Yakuza. Resident Evil was a failure after one season, Halo after two.
Hopefully S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl will be adapted in a fairly fair way (or if not this game, then the franchise), because Zone deserves to be adapted in a different way than the otherwise excellent Chernobyl.
