Jar of Sparks Halts Development: Halo Veteran’s Studio Faces Challenges

Halo Infinite’s lead developer Jerry Hook’s new studio, Jar of Sparks, pauses its first game due to funding concerns. The NetEase-backed team is now on the hunt for a new publishing partner.

Jar of Sparks, a studio founded in 2022 by Xbox veteran Jerry Hook in collaboration with publisher NetEase, has announced a suspension of its debut game’s development as it searches for fresh funding. The Seattle-based team, initially focused on creating “next-generation narrative-driven action games,” revealed the update via LinkedIn, adding that employees are being encouraged to explore new career opportunities.

Searching for New Partners

“Today, we informed our team that Jar of Sparks will pause work on our current project while we seek a publishing partner to help realize our creative vision,” the post read.

“Throughout this journey, our passionate and innovative team took bold risks, striving to create something truly groundbreaking. We are incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished so far.”

The message continued: “As we transition to this new phase, our talented team members are exploring new opportunities. If you’re in search of exceptional professionals who think outside the box, please don’t hesitate to reach out—we’d be happy to connect you with some of the best developers I’ve ever worked with.”

“From day one, this team has achieved extraordinary milestones, proving that a small and focused group can achieve remarkable results. We thank each member for their courage, talent, and friendship. We’re grateful to everyone who supported us and look forward to sharing updates on our next steps soon.”

Industry Veterans Behind the Vision

Jerry Hook, CEO and studio head of Jar of Sparks, is a Microsoft veteran instrumental in launching the original Xbox and a founding member of Xbox Live. His career spans executive roles across franchises like Halo and Destiny, with his most recent position as design lead on Halo Infinite.

Hook’s team included other industry heavyweights, such as Paul Crocker, the narrative director behind Rocksteady’s Batman: Arkham trilogy, Greg Stone, a producer with credits on Doom and Halo Infinite, and Steve Dyck, who brought experience as an animation and design director for franchises like Halo, SSX, and NBA Street.
