Square Enix has also answered the question of whether or not we’ll need the PlayStation 6 to see the final part of the remake project.
Naoki Hamaguchi (the director) and Yoshinori Kitase (the producer) gave an interview to 4Gamer.net, and while they mostly talked about the PC port of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, they also touched on how the third part of the Final Fantasy VII remake project is coming along: “As for the third game, we started working on it right after we finished Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – around March or April 2024 – so we’ve been in development for about nine months. Our goal for 2024 was to solidify the gameplay experience we were going for with the third entry in the Remake Project, and we put together a great build that was in line with the overall direction and vision of the team. Starting in 2025, we’ve entered the phase of building and refining the game based on the plan we’ve established, and development is progressing smoothly and at a good pace according to the schedule I originally laid out,” Hamaguchi said.
“When it comes to large, story-driven RPG projects, the pace of development depends heavily on whether or not the story itself is fully fleshed out. For the story of the third game, after I received the scenario from scenario writer Kazushige Nojima, I asked him to give it a greater sense of completeness, since this is the final game. We just finished that a few days ago, so I feel like things are progressing smoothly,” Kitase added, noting that it won’t be a next-gen-exclusive episode in the same way that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth skipped the PlayStation 4.
Why are Final Fantasy VII remakes coming to PC? Hamaguchi basically blamed Sony: “First of all, the Final Fantasy brand and franchise, and by extension Square Enix, has built a very strong partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). I very much hope that this will continue in the future. However, it’s also true that we’re no longer in an era where limiting the hardware on which you can play has only significant advantages. In fact, we’re seeing more and more cases where SIE titles are being released on PC in addition to PlayStation 5. Through this remake project, we have also recognized this shift and announced as a company that we will be focusing on multiplatform development. New IPs will be developed along these lines, so I personally think it is inevitable that console and PC versions will be released at the same time or very close to each other in the future.”
Hamaguchi also talked about how Square Enix plans to release the games on multiple platforms so that more people can enjoy them. While he can’t make any promises, his team wants as many people to play as possible, and they will do their best to make that happen. Maybe there will be an Xbox version?
