In a blog post, Ubisoft explained how the adventure set in feudal Japan will change the way things are done.
With two distinct characters with unique archetypes, they had to rethink how they would evolve throughout the story. Their goal was to stay close enough to the philosophy of martial arts and mastery. Both Naoe and Yasuke have mastery skill trees that will be unique to each character. These will be tied to their individual weapons as well as the archetypes of the characters.
Weapon trees can be used to improve existing skills, learn new combos, and improve the effectiveness of weapons. These will be needed as combat becomes more difficult. Naoe and Yasuke can unlock unique abilities through archetypal progression trees: for example, Yasuke can invest in Samurai training, which allows him to switch weapons during combos. Points dedicated to a craft can be used to upgrade that craft’s skill tree. To do this, our characters need to level up, which can be done through quests and activities in Feudal Japan, or by earning points for defeating unique opponents. This is intended to encourage players to venture out into the world, as it will allow them to level up more quickly.
There are also several sets of equipment that characters can find by picking them up from chests or defeated enemies. Loot is largely randomized, meaning that the majority of it will be random to create a sense of unique discovery in the French publisher’s latest game. There can be a downside to this: getting a particularly powerful weapon early in the game can break the difficulty curve, but the reverse can also be true: if you never find a particularly powerful (secondary?) weapon (because there are likely to be fixed weapon upgrades), you can have a hard time.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on March 20 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC after two delays (first in November 2024 and then in February 2025). Those who pre-order will also receive the Claws of Awaji DLC for free, adding 10 hours of additional gameplay.
