The Witcher 4 Will Feel Different: “Ciri Moves Like She Was Raised by the Wolves of Kaer Morhen”

CD Projekt RED has revealed that The Witcher 4 will introduce a major shift in combat dynamics, with Ciri bringing a movement style that sets her apart from Geralt. The RPG’s protagonist will have a much more agile and fluid fighting technique, as seen in the game’s first teaser. The developers aim to deliver an experience that feels fresh yet true to the series’ roots.

CD Projekt RED is preparing to take a bold step forward with The Witcher 4. Alongside new gameplay mechanics, enhanced visuals, and other ambitious features, the Cyberpunk 2077 creators have confirmed that Ciri will be the game’s main character, leaving Geralt of Rivia behind as a playable protagonist. But how does this affect the combat system? The developers have now answered that question, explaining that the Lion Cub of Cintra will be so agile that her fighting style will be unlike anything seen from the witchers before.

The latest episode of the studio’s AnsweRED Podcast, available on YouTube, sheds light on the inspiration behind The Witcher 4’s first trailer. “At the end of the fight, there’s a shot where the chain appears—it’s a nod to the original Witcher game. When Ciri uses the chain to pin the Bauk’s [the monster in the trailer] head to the ground, she also does an extra flip, which is really cool because Geralt would never do that,” explains Paweł Burza, Senior Communications Manager at CD Projekt RED.

“Geralt is like a solid block—heavy, strong, deliberate. Ciri, on the other hand, moves almost like water.” adds Sebastian Kalemba, the game’s director. “The difference is immediately noticeable. It’s funny because I’ve seen fans comment, saying, ‘Oh yeah, she moves like she was raised by the wolves of Kaer Morhen.’ But at the same time, she’s more nimble, which comes from her personality, her stance, and her combat approach.”

Burza chimes back in to emphasize: “Ciri’s body type is completely different from Geralt’s. Like I said, he’s built like a tank, while she’s smaller, quicker, and uses that to her advantage.” This confirms that her combat style won’t be a mere reskin of Geralt’s but will instead feature unique techniques that reflect her character and the RPG’s evolved mechanics.

CD Projekt RED Aims Higher with The Witcher 4

The Witcher 4 is shaping up to be a major evolution from its predecessor, The Witcher 3, as CD Projekt RED is going all-in on its next big project. The developers aim not only to push the game’s graphical and technological boundaries but also to refine NPC interactions, improve combat mechanics, and elevate the monster-hunting experience that fans have come to love. With all these efforts in place, anticipation for the game continues to build.
