Will the Portable PlayStation 6 Be More Powerful than the Xbox Series S?

HANDHELD NEWS – Sony and Microsoft are doing double duty: not only desktop consoles, but also a new handheld…

The handheld version of the PlayStation 6 is estimated to be more powerful than the Xbox Series S, but as we reported yesterday, it will have less power than the base PlayStation 5. Due to the lower memory bandwidth, it won’t be able to run PlayStation 5 games as well as the original system. This is according to the same source that told us about the PS5’s lack of power.

On the NeoGAF forum, Kepler L2 provided more information about the yet-to-be-announced new Sony handheld. When asked about the performance of the system, the leaker confirmed that while it won’t be as powerful as the base PlayStation 5, it will certainly be able to run its games, but with compromises: the resolution will be lower and the frame rate will be reduced. Judging from this, the leaker’s estimate of the system’s performance seems pretty accurate: putting the new handheld somewhere between the Xbox Series S and the base PlayStation 5, but the estimate is not so easy when you add in the fact that it will use a yet to be announced GPU architecture.

Speaking more about the system-on-a-chip (SoC) for the portable PlayStation 6, the leaker confirmed that it will be a different chip than the one that powers the home console. It’s designed to operate at very low voltages and will have fewer than 40 compute units (CUs), so it may contain fewer CUs than the base PlayStation 5 (it had 36). This SoC will also go into production a few months after the standard PlayStation 6 SoC, so it will certainly be a while before more credible information emerges…

After the PlayStation Vita, it should really be time to see a new handheld from Sony that runs games locally. But it’s not official yet!
