This Free Horizon-Like Game Just Dropped New Gameplay – and It Might Be a Real Threat to Sony

The so-called “Horizon clone” wants to convince you with three things: it will be free, it already has a release window, and it has just released new gameplay. Tencent’s open-world Light of Motiram is heading to PS5, mobile devices, and PC.

There’s no denying that the Horizon series is one of Sony’s most treasured IPs. With four titles under its belt and more on the horizon, it’s a flagship franchise—and that naturally invites imitators. Light of Motiram, from Tencent-owned Chinese studio Polaris Quest, drew immediate comparisons to Horizon Zero Dawn, but now it’s trying to step out of that shadow. A new gameplay trailer showcases what makes it unique.

Light of Motiram: The Free-to-Play Horizon Contender Making Waves Already

Described as a survival adventure game, Light of Motiram focuses on building bases, taming mechanical beasts called “Mechanimals,” and offering up to 10-player co-op combat. This is a significant departure from Guerrilla’s narrative-heavy approach, pushing gameplay systems to the forefront.

Tencent is going all-in on the multiplayer aspect, promising a seamless online experience. Players will be able to join each other’s games at any time without affecting their own progress. But until public testing begins, these remain exciting promises rather than proven features.

Despite its efforts to differentiate, the similarities to Horizon in visuals and open-world atmosphere remain strong. Where the combat sets itself apart is in its melee-centric design, relying on dodging, blocking, and countering instead of ranged attacks. Players can also control and customize large mechs that serve different roles—tanks, support, and more—adding new layers of strategy.

Light of Motiram will launch as a free-to-play game on PS5, iOS, Android, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. While the release date is still under wraps, the project is already making headlines, not only due to its resemblance to Horizon, but because Tencent continues expanding its influence in the industry. The company recently invested in a new Ubisoft studio tasked with overseeing major franchises like Assassin’s Creed and Far Cry.
